Scientist/Senior Scientist, Oligonucleotide Chemistry

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Scientist/Senior Scientist position represents a unique opportunity for a talented individual with oligonucleotide experience to join a dynamic chemistry and nucleotide focused team with significant impact on advancing our science and success of the company.  In this visible role, the candidate will be responsible for the design and synthesis of novel modified oligonucleotides to advance Atalanta’s drug discovery programs.  This individual will have extensive experience with synthesis, purification, and analytics of oligonucleotides and nucleoside analogs, as well as demonstrated ability to work as part of an integrated team on multiple parallel projects.  S/he will have in depth experience in the field of oligonucleotide/peptide therapeutics with hands-on knowledge of chemical structure search tools, synthesis techniques, purification instrumentation, and analysis methods related to chemically modified oligonucleotides.  The Scientist/Senior Scientist will interact with all levels of the organization and take on substantial ownership within Atalanta’s chemistry function.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and execute the preparation of novel structures that enhance the distribution and function of oligonucleotide therapeutics
  • Responsible for the design, synthesis and characterization of novel oligonucleotide structures to improve siRNA potency and efficacy
  • Operate and oversee the interpretation of data from LC-MS as well as analytical and preparative HPLC
  • Experience operating oligonucleotide synthesis equipment from ABI, Akta, Dr. Oligo and Mermade is desirable
  • Mentor associate scientists in the principles and practices of automated syntheses, cleavage and deprotection reactions, and purification and analysis of final products
  • Participate in and contribute to cross disciplinary discussions to effectively innovate on Atalanta’s novel oligonucleotide platform
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Work with biology and biochemistry team members to design and execute new assays to rapidly reach critical go/no-go decisions
  • Take a leadership role in maintaining all aspects of laboratory instrumentation and operations in the oligonucleotide laboratory
  • Supervise and/or lead associates in a cross functional team environment
  • Convey novel innovations at the project team level

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD or equivalent degree with 0-5 plus years of professional work experience is required
  • In-depth understanding of Oligonucleotide chemistry synthesis principles is required
  • Experience and knowledge of nucleoside and nucleotide chemical modification properties and interactions in the context of siRNA and/or nucleic acid technologies is preferred
  • Experience with solution conjugation of lipids, small molecules or targeting ligands to oligonucleotides is desirable
  • Previous supervisory experience is a plus
  • Excellent organization and record keeping skills are essential
  • Demonstrated ability to independently resolve challenging scientific problems
  • A strong commitment to scientific integrity and laboratory excellence is required
